My wife was still having periods when her symptoms started so, whilst we had an idea it could be the menopause, we weren’t 100% sure. We went to see a gynaecologist who didn’t offer any clarity, addressing each symptom in isolation. We had private health insurance, so we persevered trying to find the right person to help her. Eventually we saw a leading menopause specialist, who assessed all of her symptoms collectively and has started her on the right therapy.
In the end, it took my wife 9 months and 7 appointments to finally get the help she needed. We had appointments with gynaecologists, dermatologists and endocrinologists – we saw them all! If we hadn’t had private insurance which allowed us to keep seeking help, she never would have gotten the support she needed. There are so many women in this position – we need to make it easier.
Reflection
•Did you know that menopause symptoms could start whilst women are still having their periods?
•How do you think we can make this process easier for women?
